A Nightmare for Big Blue

The Giants went from an exciting Week 1 victory to a nightmare in Los Angeles. A 28-6 loss was bad enough, but injuries to key players — including Jaxson Dart’s…

—

Dart was injured on the Giants’ opening drive after taking a hit from two Rams defenders. What initially appeared to be an MCL injury turned out to be significantly worse, and the Giants are now facing the possibility of playing the rest of the season without the quarterback they drafted to be their future.

This was supposed to be the year Giants fans finally got to see what their young quarterback could become. Dart opened the season with three touchdown passes, 54 rushing yards and a 130 passer rating against Dallas. Then, seven offensive plays into Week 2, everything changed.

And the Rams absolutely destroyed the Giants after that.

Los Angeles finished with 481 yards of offense compared with just 182 for New York. Matthew Stafford threw four touchdowns, while Davante Adams went off for 195 yards and two touchdowns.

But the biggest concern isn’t even the loss.

It’s the injuries.

Brian Burns suffered a low ankle sprain. Andrew Thomas left with a groin injury. Malik Nabers also suffered a shoulder injury but returned to the game. Deonte Banks was already unavailable because of a calf injury.

That’s a lot of important players either leaving the game, missing the game, or dealing with injuries.

And then there’s Jameis Winston.

I’m sorry, but Giants fans need to be realistic here.

Winston went 11-for-27 for 111 yards and an interception against the Rams.

Can Winston step in and give this team some competent quarterback play? Sure.

But Jameis Winston cannot be the answer for an entire season.

That’s not an insult to Winston. It’s reality. The Giants built this season around Jaxson Dart. If Dart is out for the year, this isn’t simply a matter of saying, “Alright, Jameis, go win us 15 games.”

Was There a Plan B?

There isn’t a proven backup sitting behind Winston right now.

The Giants have Jake Haener on the practice squad, and he could potentially be elevated if necessary. But that’s a massive difference from having another established NFL starter waiting in the wings.

So if you’re a Giants fan sitting there saying, “Of course this happens to us,” I understand the frustration.

But let’s pump the brakes on the idea that the Giants somehow have the worst situation in football.

Giants fans have spent years talking about how miserable this franchise has been. Now, after one impressive win against Dallas, people were ready to believe this team had finally turned the corner.

They’re fighting injuries, uncertainty, and a quarterback situation nobody expected to be dealing with this early in the season.

And Giants fans?

You wanted something to finally go right.

Instead, you got a nightmare.
